M:Science’s SMS service is being used by the organisers of Guitars on the Beach, a free event that is attempting to break its own record for Britain’s biggest band.
The event, sponsored by Fender and Planet Rock magazine, taking place on Saturday 6th September, on the beach in Lyme Regis, Dorset, attracted 2,276 guitarists last time, breaking the record with a mass jam of Buddy Holly’s ‘Rave On’.
The organisers are hoping to break the world record this year, and have been boosted by the fact that legendary rock star, Ian Gillan, has taken time out from Deep Purple’s tour of America to sing the notorious ‘Smoke on the Water’ at the event and join in with the record attempt.
Registration for the event is available online, but knowing the unreliability of Wi-Fi and 3G services in fairly remote locations, the Guitars on the Beach organisers wanted a sure-fire solution that could provide a simple method of registering attendance on the day to help verify numbers for the record attempt.
They decided that SMS text messaging was the answer and approached M:Science for a solution. M:Science provided an inbound number and helped set up a bespoke reporting system which will monitor the registration activity throughout the day.
The event will have bands on stage from 11am – 11pm, with the record attempt starting at 4pm. Participants can join up by registering online http://www.guitarsonthebeach.co.uk/join-up or by texting their name and hometown to 07624 811444.
